40th Birthday

How should Bangladesh celebrate its 40th birthday in 2011?
22 December 2010

We invite visitors to suggest ideas for celebrating the four decades of Bangladesh. We need to look back at how we managed our domestic affairs and conducted international relations since the country's independence in 1971. What policies and practices worked well and what we should avoid in the future? We need to identify and agree the best guiding principles which will set us on a trajectory of speedy sustainable economic / social development and help promote national unity.

We will only publish positive and balanced comments and suggestions with respect to the above topic.

For the last 40 Years of our independence, we observed that the political groups of Bangladesh have been divided into two main streamlines. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of our independence festival in a befitting manner, we need to have national consensus on some political issues. The present Government in power and opposition political parties should come forward to sit in a negotiation round table to this end.

I would like to celebrate the success that Bangladesh made in her travel she made so far. I would support an initiative that will help restore self respect in our political leaders and enable them to understand the importance of respecting others.  Once that is achieved then I feel we can move further forward in our socio economic progression. Perhaps starting point would be to set up an Award for dignified and well respected politicians in Bangladesh so that we can begin to identify positive political role models and consequently contribute to development of positive politics.

We must collectively and individually promote Bangladesh in a positive way at every opportunity. This includes both words and deeds be they in our professional or personal lives. I would like to particularly celebrate the lives of Bangladeshi women who have contributed to the nation.

Nafiza Anwar, Buchden, 24 December 2010As a British Bangladeshi this would be an opportunity to contribute to the community both here and back in Bangladesh.

Create a society where young people can succeed in life without having an affiliation with a political party.

Agree with Fuad. Justice, apologies and forgiveness will help Bangladesh and Bangladeshis move on. Also let's celebrate by rewarding and somewhat celebritifying non-corrupt, public servants from pions to secretaries...

We feel proud as Bangladeshi not Bengali. Those who think they are Bengali, must rethink rationally is it realistic that we are Bengali. It is absurd that after forty years, we are unable to decide our national identity. Corruption in judiciary and security forces must stop otherwise the whole notion of independence to general public will be meaningless.

Hasan Mueenuddin, London, 23 December 2010 I think it would be wise for the people of Bangladesh to celebrate its 40th birthday by being more democratic in its governance and ensuring the judiciary to function independently without any influence of politicians. In my view that would be real achievement of last 40 years. Through justice freedom and equality can be guaranteed for the people of Bangladesh.

Hold a nationwide oath ceremony featuring that All Bangladeshis, specifically, politicians, bureaucrats, students, and teachers will behave like civilized human beings; that they will not speak unkindly of and to each other; that they not cheat on each other; that they will not call each other names; that they will treat each other with respect and humility; that they will not kill each other for political reasons; that they will speak their minds politely and let others speak; that they will debate issues civilly.

Institute a justice and reconciliation commission for the 40 years to stem the flow of poison.
